Seems like this is more a story about being responsible with backups. A workflow that allows 800gb of data to exist on a single drive is flawed regardless of the computer. Apple laptops from 2016 on have had the ssd soldered in, it’s not exclusive to the M1 machines. Also logic board failures are quite common, I’ve had 2 on a 2017 mbp.
